Nipah virus (NiV) infection is a newly emerging zoonosis thatcauses severe disease in both animals and humans. The natural host of the virus are fruit bats of the Pteropodidae Family, Pteropus genus.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:-unnamed.png
Infection with Nipah virus is associated with encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). After exposure and an incubation period of 5 to 14 days, illness presents with 3-14 days of fever and headache, followed by drowsiness, disorientationand mental confusion.

HOW IT SPREADS:-
The virus spreads directly from human-to-human through close contact with people's secretions and excretions. Eating partially-eaten fruits by infected bats and partially-cooked meat of infected animals can also trigger the virus. Drinking date palm sap/toddy/juice can also cause the infection.

TREATMENT:-
Currently, there is no vaccine or drug available for humans or animals. The primary treatment is intensive supportive care for people suffering from severe respiratory and neurologic complications.

PREVENTION:-
