Oops! A "Fat Finger" Deletes the STEEM.GLOBAL Faucet! Initiating Rebuild Sequence.

Just a Reminder to ALWAYS Check What Server You're in!

Yesterday I had been up for a day working on various projects.. Generally this isn't a big deal! However I was in one of my servers and noticed some files out of place.. So being the "1337" systems operator I am, went ahead and got rid of the folders and files I thought were out of place. As any good nerd would do right?

Turns out those files and folders were the entire working directory of the STEEM.GLOBAL website! You can only imagine my surprise when I went to go check the faucet and was greeted by a server 500 error, which is server slang for "Admin you SUCK!".

A Blessing in Disguise Perhaps..?

Don't take this the wrong way at all, but as sexy as the old STEEM.GLOBAL site was... This newer re-incarnation being constructed looks a solid 500% better (in my biased opinion) than the 1.0.3 version of the site. This also allows me the chance to code in some stuff I'd have liked to see on the previous version but got distracted on the dice and never ended up implementing.

Estimated Time Till STEEM.GLOBAL is Operational?

The new front end is roughly 1/3rd completed and this morning (6:55AM as of writing this) I'll be getting the steemd installed and synced. Accounts unfortunately will have to be recreated as me being the silly bugger I am didn't think to backup users or balances.. And even if I had I probably would have deleted them anyways!

My rough estimate is that the STEEM.GLOBAL seed node and faucet will be up before monday. Hopefully sooner! I will make an announcement post when v2.0.0 is online.

Accidents Happen, No Sense Beating Myself up Over it!

While embarrassed about it and having costed myself a fair amount of time honestly not too upset over it. The faucet was broken for a week due to wallet issues and this gives me a chance to re-write and rebuild some things to provide a better service for the STEEM community. Once I get this rebuilt I'll be devoting my time to getting steem-roller going.

As an added bonus when the STEEM.GLOBAL faucet is running again I'll be significantly upping the daily payouts for a week or so to catch everyone up on what they missed out on while the site was down. Sorry for any inconvenience caused. :)

I think anyone in the IT industry can attest to blowing away something they did not intend to delete. It happens to the best of us.

The problem with having too much open, being far to tired and getting distracted is something I've got to work on!

Glad to know I'm not the only person out there that accidentally nuked their own stuff!

Oh, terminal, using the commands history, one more press on an arrow, reflexes working and quickly hit enter. What was that? Damn, it started with rm. :D
It happened only once. My half afternoon was gone.

There should be an extreme warning associated with the command:

rm * -r

A long time ago, I was cleaning up after completing a project. I thought I was in the right directory and issued that dreaded command.

Big OOPS! And you get that sinking feeling.... what did I just do... NO! Too late, it is gone.

Doing that one or two times, you quickly learn.

These days we have a lot better backups and configuration management. And more strict controls on who can alter the production environment.

I wondered what happened...I just went back as it was down for a few and got this:

Your connection is not private

Attackers might be trying to steal your information from steem.global (for example, passwords, messages, or credit cards). NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID

I've started fresh on the server actually. Meaning the old SSL certificates aren't valid anymore that your version of Chrome is using.

I got this error as well. Your chrome caches the old certificate the site had and thus is complaining . after I cleaned my browser history and cookies this problem went away. The site is still under reconstruction and I'll get SSL certs done up again here shortly.
