(Click Image above to visit the streemit.online alpha)

Work continued today on the recently announced streemit.online service which will launch as the first streaming platform in history to allow Steem Backed Dollar (SBD) tips directly to users who enjoy their streems. The goal is to have streemit basic functionality and testing done by the end of this week and launch officially before the 17th of October, 2016. While this is the launch goal that is being aimed for.. I'm only 1 individual currently developing the site and if anyone is willing to lend their PHP, Javascript, HTML5, iOS, Andriod development wizardry to the cause it would greatly help speed up the process.

Funds Spent so Far Building streemit.online

It was a bit of an expensive day today in regards to purchasing various software licenses needed and servers to run the backbone of the streemit site. As userbase grows on the site and the need to upgrade to more powerful streaming servers is recognized I'll be sure to give far warning here and on site as to when upgrades will be coming. Lets look below at a breakdown of what was spent today on development:

Wowza Streaming Engine (1 Month): $65 USD (Paid)

The most expensive and complicated piece of the streemit puzzle is the engine that drives video streaming and content serving. It's my belief that the STEEM network's users deserve the best and that's exactly what we're going to get! As of earlier today the monthly license to allow unrestricted access to the Wowza Streaming Engine has been purchase and is valid until November 14th, 2016. If streemit proves to be well accepted and used in the future a proposal to raise the $2000 USD to buy the rights to use their engine outright will likely be made.

VideoWhisper Streaming Client (1 Month): $45 USD (Paid)

Fast site deployment requires using already developed and tested systems in order to deliver a stable product far ahead of the projected curve if all software on the site was developed in house. While I'll admit the client that streemit is currently using isn't the most up to date nor well reviewed software out there, it serves a honourable purpose.. It serves as a pretty solid platform to build our own customized streaming client in the near future once development time and funds are put aside.

Streemit Web Servers (1 Month): ~$60 USD (Paid)

(screencap of streaming server bill)

(screencap of front end server bill)

Every epic site on the web started somewhere.. streemit.online is no exception. The front end is currently being served from a relatively inexpensive datacenter located out of Quebec, Canada which runs roughly $18 CAD (Canadian Dollar) a month. Where the real powerful server boxes are needed is for processing and distributing incoming video streams.. In order to keep the project's first few months affordable while the waters are tested to see if the service is going to be used, a pretty decently powered dedicated server has been rented. Specs below:

CPUSpeedCores / ThreadsRAMStorage
Intel Xeon E3 1245v23.4 GHz+4 c/ 8 t32 GB4 TB SATA3

This will likely get upgraded if the demand is there for the site to exist with larger servers. Very excited to see what the future of the STEEM project holds and I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity to serve the community and develop services a long side our growing society.

Overall right now streemit.online costs $170 per a month to run by time you factor in the licensing rentals and servers. Meaning that with the liquid funds raised in the original announcement post will cover at least 2 almost 3 months of streemit.online operating costs. Hopefully the sites once finished gets enough users on there and tipping to pay for itself. A weekly and monthly budget posts will be done to let people know how the site is fairing financially. We are all owners of Streemit. Every single person who upvoted or donated towards the development of this project should consider themselves an esteemed board member. As Streemit development continues any form of constructive criticism or pointers is greatly appreciated. :)

Testers, Moderators and Streemers Wanted!

While the site is still very much under construction registration is now open! Deposit system is currently being built and therfore is set to manual mode, meaning that if you do send funds they will eventually be credited to your account, but onl;y after I've gone and manually checked the transfer was complete. The withdrawal system hasn't got anything built front end wise so if you do deposit any withdrawal won't be possible from on the site and I'll have to manually process withdrawals.

Please feel free to check out the site and sign up for an account. There WILL be bugs. Please don't deposit large amounts of STEEM / SBD at this point in the project. It's still very much experimental and under construction.

Things will change, break and be fixed on the site daily as the build aims to get the site fully operational by end of this week. Please feel free to comment any bugs you find here below with a nice screenshot and explanation on how to recreate it, what browser you are on and any other info you think may be valid.

@klye Looking good. I have the account setup, and was wondering if I can upload a video as well or if it will need to be recorded live?

I was considering adding video upload functionality. Currently the site is set up to only cater to live streaming.

Tomorrow I'll look into seeing if I can implement video uploading on the site. May have to look into what costs for large storage volumes are and see if it's feasible. :)

Great thanks!

Working on getting video recording and embedding put into the site now. :)

I have been checking out the site almost every day. Once the function allows me to upload I will put a few on the system to test. I can see the photo option seems to work so I will upload a photo today.

Right on man!

Sorry the site has been up and down today. Breaking and fixing as I go!

Amazing efforts hopefully it will be great for steem lovers.

Thank you for the kind words. :)

welcome dear @klye

Do you consider possible that users could upvote on your site just like here on Steemit?

perhaps in the future I'll be able to get a platform coded up that deals with tipping streemers.

This service is based around STEEM users and utilizes SBD as the tipping currency (very similar to here). However the main difference between Steemit and Streemit is that currently Streemit runs on a centralized server.

In the future given enough interest, time and developer attention it may be possible to decentralize the video streaming.. However I'm not currently a great enough block chain architect to pull off such a feat.

We need notifications asap. I see, I was thinking more of an way to include steemit voting to other sites and everywhere possible. Example being youtube site but upvotong would use your steemit voting power etc.

Hi, joined recently to explore Steemit and noticed this older project that used one of VideoWhisper.com webcam live streaming solutions.

Wow! Thank you for your dedicated work! I'm very excited by this project and thank you for letting me be the first to alpha test it! I'll be sure to brag about it when the site gets big!

You were the first person to receive a streem from the site. Indeed. :)

Thanks for helping me test man.

Up-voted and re-steemed @klye for sure I will give it a try ... and I was wondering if it would possible to use this service also to stream in the Steemfest @roelandp :) (plus the other stream)

The hope was Id have it done and working before steemfest so they could set up a channel and streem the festivities. :)

:) good!

I have tested online applications before, let me know here or in chat if you want someone to just pound on it some for you.

Thanks man. Yeah give me a day or so to finish some stuff up then we can have you in to brake all the things that I haven't yet. :)

Let me know how I can get involved :)
[email protected] . I've been looking into this and want to help you grow!

Sure thing man! Will shoot you an email here in the next day or so

Thanks man!

Nice job @klye!

Have you considered any of the blockchain tech currencies for streaming instead of the older methods? I hear there are some coins out there in development. Oh and for video uploading services this would be an even better idea.

I've started looking into it. Perhaps in the future once my coding ability catches up with my ability to dream up projects.

Would be awesome to see a fully decentralized streemit in the future. While I can't say it would be the easiest thing to develop I know darn well the technology of decentralized video sharing would be veeeeery lucrative.

Excellent! I'll be checking in on it to see its functionality soon. I'm hoping it's more like google hangouts instead of periscope...but I won't know 'til I get in there, will I?

While currently the site is being built more towards periscope I have a number of folks asking me if there will be free 2 way video. I'll very likely look into getting it implemented and tested here today. :)

Awesome man, I am traveling just now (bit if a holiday) but will try it out when I get back!!

Hopefully the site will be fully operational by then. :)

i will do anything i can to help you test. i was going to build pretty much the same thing... thank you. :D

"right on! thanks for the offer!"
forgive the bullshit, but you only replied to EVERY other comment. lol

Thank you for the update and the great progress you have made on this project.

I am sure the site will take off, but it make take a bit longer than you think. So just in case, I have transferred another small contribution to the @streemit.online account.

This is truly a worthy project to support for the benefit of the SteemIt community and STEEM.

Steem on,
Mike

Thank you very much mike!

Currently the only thing holding me back from putting in 25 hours a day into the site is the girlfriend is out and she gets pretty downright nasty when I don't entertain her after she drives out to see me.

Going to work on the site for a few hours here as she's asleep, then have a nap myself and when I get up she's off to work and I'll be grinding hard to get streemit going. :)

Life is a balancing act. We are always balancing something.

Please take the time to sleep and spend time with your loved ones. When you do get back to work rested and fulfilled, the work always seems to go faster.

Steem on,
Mike

Well, if spending that much time on your site is important to you, you could just say so. :/

I don't have to come out to visit on my days off. Just let me know when your site is finished.

You act like I haven't just taken a whole day off of working on the 100 different things I've got currently going on to play video games with you on your days off. :/ I'm an incredibly busy person these days and I certainly don't mean to make it sound like you're a burden. But you have to understand that I have more people than just you relying on me to get a bunch of things done here in the next few days. Sorry if you took the comment the wrong way...

I love taking time off to spend with you. However for you to imply that any of my projects are more important than you is absurd. Especially given the fact I had just taken time off to spend it with you.
