The Royal Soap Opera – Entertainment for the plebs!

in news •  7 years ago

There is no escaping it. No matter where you live and what your personal interests might be, you must be aware of the historic event taking place this weekend in London – the marriage of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle. As the bride is American, not only Europeans are invested in the royal soap, but the US media are also working double time to make sure their viewers are up to date with the latest dramatic events – will the father of the bride be there, who's going to walk her to the altar, what's the dress gonna be like...
As we're all force fed useless irrelevant trivia 24/7, no wonder someone came up with a clever idea – the royal wedding sick bag!

There's a lot of speculation regarding Harry's choice of a bride, but I feel Meghan is right for the job, given her acting background. That's what the British royal family is today, a bunch of entertainers who earn their (lavish) keep by putting on a show for the common people. Really, what is it that this Meghan girl will have to do other than dress for the occasion, smile and wave at the crowds. That's what they all do! A couple of weeks ago we've all watched Kate walk out of hospital, hair nicely done, holding her newborn son – and the whole world gasped: 'Wow, how does she do it to be so perfect? Poor woman, barely a few hours after giving birth, I bet all she wants is to be at home!'
I'm sorry, but that's her job, to be the perfect princess or duchess or whatever and have the commoners enthralled. If she wants to continue living in that palace of hers she'd better be good!
Take the Queen, she's been on the English throne for as long as we can remember and I cannot recall one thing she ever did – besides showing up at public functions with her traditional hat? Can you remember any moment in the past decades when she actually did something – like make an important speech, other than those scripted for her? Did she weigh in on some crucial event – like the UK's going to war or Brexit?

Selfie with the royal wax figures!

Today, the British royal family has no role or relevance whatsoever, sadly I would say. Gone are the days when the British monarch would lead the army on the battlefield or sign a peace treaty. They're there only to give the public something to focus their attention on, while the temporary resident of Downing Street 10 has the real power.
Meghan Markle is a great addition to the cast – there will be plenty of revelations, juicy tidbits of gossip and scandals to keep the public entertained for a few seasons more.

Not to mention that the plebs like a good Cinderella story – the common girl who married a Prince.
I find it fascinating how many people are desperate to associate their image to royalty. The moment one of them steps out in a new dress, you can be sure the item will be sold out in the next few hours. Everybody wants to dress like Kate or have their little ones wearing the same outfit as the cute little Prince George. Somehow I am more understanding of all the women desperate to have big bottoms like the Kardashians! And all the morons giving royal names to their new babies – I fail to see how that's gonna help the poor kids in their lives.

Royal fans gathered outside Windsor Castle!

Some Brits have been in London since the beginning of the week camping on the streets just to get a good view of the wedding – basically a few moments when the cars or carriages drive by. Just to say they were there, bring home some memorabilia, too.

While the whole nation watches the royal wedding, nobody gives a damn about the real problems of their country – Brexit negotiations, the UK's involvement in Syria, events in the Middle East. Who has time for that when we still don't know if the father of the bride will attend the wedding or not?
Unfortunately, it's not just the British that are caught up in the royal soap – every paper in the world has significant coverage of the event ('Ten facts you must know about the royal wedding') and many TV channels around the world will broadcast live the wedding.
A few months ago I wrote about the death of the last Romanian king, Michael – as he was a decent man with a tragic story. But he belonged to another era, when kings and queens meant something. I have no interest in the lives of our remaining royals as it is painfully obvious they all stick around for the money. Just like the British royals, only those are a million times richer. If they want to continue enjoying their gilded lives they have to stick with the program, play nice and put on a good show on Saturday.

I do apologize for the use of words like plebs and commoners, but that's what the ruling elites think of us all!

Thanks for reading

well i wasn't aware of it, until I read a post by @ladyrebecca, as I do.
I'm too busy looking at brexit, wars in syria, and stuff.

I now hate you - just a little bit!
lol

while the temporary resident of Downing Street 10 has the real power.

oh, no they have no power either..more entertainment for the plebs..

Now, you've made me feel bad... I'm sorry I poisoned even one of your brain cell with such nonsense! I have the bad habit of reading British papers online... I'll have to do something about that, I know... but I don't watch TV, I swear! On the other hand, a lot of people spend their time glued to their TV sets...and that's what they hear all day, every day. And they're a majority, unfortunately.

it's ok, I forgive you! lol

It got me thinking about a satirical post on the royal wedding....I'll let you know if it comes to fruition!

you were my muse, (or spark, or something)..thank you...

Oh dear, I'm with @lucylin. This is the first I've heard of it. I must be reading the wrong news sources.

No, I'm the one reading the wrong papers...

Hahaha, true that!!!

Harry and Meghan are gross. I wouldn't call Theresa May powerful. Feckless would be a better description.
