How would you explain libertarianism to yourself?

imageIf you could go back in time and explain libertarianism to your own rookie libertarian SELF (read: NOT ANYONE ELSE, this isn't a purity test) what advice or concepts would you give to yourself to focus on?

What would have sped your conversion if you had understood a certain thing sooner? For me it would be fundamentally understanding the difference between cost and value.

I would also drive into my own head that just because the government has assumed a certain role does not mean it is actually accomplishing that role and that there aren't other forces at work driving it organically that the government is just taking credit for.

Finally, I would say - Voluntaryism means you can still have morals, but we leave the government out of it!

Sort Order:

It all boils down to the "Right to be Left Alone". Governments, Religions, The Aristocrats and now Corporate Interests seek to dominate the individual for their own power and profit.

Every Man and Women should be their "Own Republic", free to pursue life as they wish with the minimum of restrictions, laws, regulations and other interference.

I might try to get myself to see that even though some things may be great for a community or society, that if is good alone does not justify taking a government taking your money to pay for them. If you want to spend your money on something, nothing is stopping you.
