Sante Fe School Shooting

A shooting happened today in Texas, Killing 10 and wounding 10 more, so far reported. From what I've read, it started as a fire drill, then students started hearing shots. The shooter was a student, and other students say he was quiet, was good in school, involved in sports, but didn't have many friends, and was picked on by coaches. A video below of an interview. News also says that he only targetted specific people, avoiding people "he liked". Stealing his father's shotgun, and a handgun.

For some reason this seems to be a repeating pattern in shootings. A lack of empathy, and attention to/for the shooter. As well as a lack of security of the person responsible for the firearms, which usually happens to be the father in most cases. There's also no mention of a school resource officer, or anything similar until the police/SWAT show up.

Which leads me to believe this could've been stopped had there been someone there. A SRO, a teacher, anyone with a means to defend the staff and students there. Or some kind of initiative to talk to others, and check on them. High School is a pretty toxic environment, and I'm sure many kids feel trapped in it. There's a lot of talk about gun control and mental health. With studies showing that Defensive gun use per year can be anywhere from 55,000 at low estimates, to 4,700,000 at high estimates[1]. As well as studies linking certain drugs to violent behavior[2].

This is not a simple problem, with any simple solutions. I feel like any measures taken on guns, or the mental health of people will be more akin to treating the symptoms of this issue, rather than the cause.
