A World Without Love

So this will be my first story...

Something terrible happened over the last few days, and I don't know who is to blame, and what can be done now. Basically, a guy called Chester Bennington, just 41 years old, is said to have taken his life. A famous singer for the band called Linkin Park, but more than that, was someone suffering severely. It is known that he was suffering from depression, and wanted to see things change. Though the troublesome thing is, that for many years things didn't change, like most people would only hope. And the problem I see is being able to motivate yourself enough to find a way out. Since there is comfort in suffering, and no light, but a long tunnel, what hope does someone have?

Firstly, they don't have anyone to understand them, since their perspective of thinking is very unique from most people, and most people don't speak their mind, but in a way that conforms to social norms. This kind of structure in society is difficult to live with, where people move around so freely that they are unable to form strong bonds, or break into new social groups.

Secondly, there is a problem of cognitive dissonance with depression, where people have many different interests, and concepts of identity which develop at different times, and what your identity is, and what you want to do slowly becomes a painful blur... Where you don't know why you're living, or find long term pleasure in things. Days, and days go by, but to what end?

I thought of writing this post, as many of his songs moved me. And felt like a desperate cry for help, I don't know why, or what happened, all I know is that he is gone now... This is my own understanding of depression, and as a Psychology student of 4 years, my perspective is that the environment as having a larger role, as the genetic predisposition cannot be altered in the same way. I hope that this story can spark a debate, and lead to links, and resources in a positive, and constructive way.

What a wonderful world it would be if we could just love and be happy without judgement and prejudice.

Depression is a horrible and largely misunderstood illness. I've suffered from it since I was five years old and it never gets any easier. I've had many thoughts of taking my own life and a few attempts to do so. It's not something I feel I can control in that moment so my defence has been to drink until I pass out. Everyday is a fight; Chester lost that fight sadly and will be missed. Linkin park were part of the childhood I had and I felt a connection with their music. Out of all of the celebrity deaths over the last year, this one gets to me the most.

RIP. I hope in death you find the peace you felt you couldn't find in life.
