A group called America First! plans to rally against illegal immigration and in support of a stronger border in Laguna Beach on Sunday, Aug. 20.
A Facebook event post called an “Electric Vigil for Victims of Illegals and Refugees” has 83 people who say they plan to attend.
Laguna Beach police Chief Laura Farinella said her department has communicated with the organizer and given them a time and place to exercise their First Amendment rights. They have also told them they must be lawful, she said.
The group has held three prior rallies in Laguna Beach without incident, police Sgt. Jim Cota said Monday. The last was held on July 30.
About 100 people gathered with no incident at that event, Cota said.
In a YouTube video of the event, participants waved flags and yelled for stronger border protection. One demonstrator screamed, “Make America Great Again!” and covered his face with a rubber mask of President Trump.
Sunday’s plans follow a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia on Saturday that turned violent, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to many more.
Mission Viejo resident, Kenny Strawn, who in a YouTube video called for support for Sunday’s rally, said he attended the July rally and wants this one to be a repeat.
“We want to gain national, possibly international attention,” he said, while talking for more than five minutes about why Laguna is the selected venue.
