Qualcomm's Fingerprint Sensor is arguably a follow-up to Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon Sense ID fingerprint technology.

The newly announced sensor will allow the fingerprint to be scanned on materials of glass, display, metal and can be done in the water though. In addition to scanning prints, these new sensors will also take heart rate and detect blood flow, which can help improve authentication. Directed gestures allow users to control notification shadows and open applications by moving the finger to the rear fingerprint scanner.

Qualcomm's Fingerprint Sensor can integrate with the Snapdragon mobile platform, and can function as a standalone sensor on a non-Snapdragon platform. The Fingerprint Sensor for glass and metal will work with the recently launched Snapdragon 660 and 630 chipsets. The Fingerprint Sensor for Display, Glass and Metal will be compatible with Snapdragon's future mobile platforms and platforms unrelated to Snapdragon though.

This new feature gives more flexibility for manufacturers to design the sensor on their newest handset. Qualcomm's fingerprint sensors for glass and metal will be offered to manufacturers this month and will likely be adopted on commercial smartphones during the first half of next year. Sensors for Display will be ready for evaluation by the manufacturer during the fourth quarter of this year.

As presented by Seshu Madhavapeddy, who currently serves as vice president, product management at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., It is excited to announce Qualcomm's fingerprint sensors that can be designed to support slimmer and more sophisticated form factors, unique mobile authentication experience, and advanced security authentication. This feature gives OEMs and operators the ability to offer different devices and deliver added value to new, truly innovative devices.

The "introduced" this like two years ago, too. When are we going to see it in products already?
