Why Is Microsoft Buying Github?

in news •  7 years ago  (edited)

It was a rude shock for me to read the latest news from [bitcoinist](http://bitcoinist.com/microsoft-buy-github-bitcoin-devs-exit/) that Microsoft has struck a $2billion deal to buy GitHub. Why? What does this news portend for steem?

Will open source coders switch to bitbucket and jira?

I would switch to either gitlab or fossil. I have to use Jira and work and don't really care for it.

The question should be, why would the Github team sell out open-source for a mere 2Billion. If this is true, then it means that MS just wants to key into the future coz the future is Open-source.

It won't do any harm to steem I suppose.

I agree with you, @nairadaddy. Why should Github sell their company to Microsoft for a paltry sum of $2 billion. Well, bitcoin developers are thinking that this move would stall development. That's why I asked what this portends for #steem as well .

Will there be a mass exodus toward Utopian that is on the Steem blockchain?

I really don't know. Why do you ask?

A lot of open source developers are not big fans of Microsoft.

Cos they needed a move to stay relevant or they'd fall (as unbelievable as it might sound).

In my opinion, if such deal goes positive then I think the future will decide itself. If microsoft are approaching Github then it means MS appreciates open source.
