The U.S. Navy says a search and rescue operation is underway after the USS John S. McCain collided with a 600-foot oil and chemical tanker east of Singapore at 6:24 a.m. local time.
The ship was en route to a routine port visit in Singapore at the time of the collision.
The guided-missile destroyer is named for the Arizona’s senator’s father and grandfather, both of whom were admirals.
