Members in Cape Town (Western Cape province) should anticipate disruption on 22 October after calls for a taxi protest over fines levied on drivers.

Taxi drivers are expected to gather at 10.00 (local time) at Khayelitsha and drive to the central business district (CBD) by 14.00 (local time).

A similar taxi blockade occurred on 18 October, affecting the N2 highway, among other routes.

Police fired rubber bullets and used water cannon to disperse it.

Members should plan routes bypassing the affected areas as a precaution and to minimise inconvenience.

WHAT WE ADVISED YOUR TRAVELLERS
• Plan routes bypassing areas on the route between Khayelitsha and the CBD, as well as affected parts of the CBD, as a precaution and to minimise delays.
• Liaise with local contacts to reconfirm the status of routes before setting out on the day.
• Allow extra journey time if travel in the wider vicinity is unavoidable.
• Do not attempt to cross a protest roadblock, as this may prompt a hostile response.
• In the event of unrest, leave the area immediately and relocate to a safe location.
• Anticipate a heightened security force presence in the vicinity of the motorcade; follow all official directives.
• Monitor our South Africa alerts for updates.
