Tension between the rival nations is continuing to escalate, with the communist state recently boasting President Donald Trump "cannot dare" spark a war.
It comes after leader Kim Jong-un claimed he has a nuclear button ready to press at any time, leading Trump to retaliate with his own threat of a nuke blast.
Now former US Vice Chief of Staff, Jack Keane, has warned the two are edging closer towards World War 3.
Speaking on Fox News, he said: "We are much closer to war than we have ever been before with North Korea.
"Yes, we are because this administration is determined not to let North Korea threaten the American people with nuclear weapons.
"They’re not going to let that happen."
He added: "Mike Pompeo reaffirmed once again that we are only months away from North Korea reaching their final technological objective of nuclearising ICBMs capable of re-entry from outer space.
"If that’s the case then we have got a showdown coming here pretty soon."
However, he played down fears a war is imminent, claiming immediate warning signs – including air, sea and ground deployments – have not yet emerged.
North Korea ended months of silence in November by launching a Hwasong-15 missile, claiming it was its most powerful yet and capable of reaching the US.

While I like the article, I disagree. Yes, tensions are high and if anyone is going to start a nuclear war it will be Trump. That said, there's too much at stake politically for war to break out.
The tough talk out of both Trump and Kim come from a desire to show domestic populations that they are the "bigger man". It's meant for domestic consumption.
Walk down the streets of Seoul tomorrow... no one is preparing for a war. Same with the North Koreans... Same with Washington... Same with Japan and China.
And for a military man to say on Fox News that "we are much closer to war than we have ever been with North Korea" is a load of garbage. Clearly he doesn't remember the 1950s, when they were actually at war. Or 1994, when both Koreas were on a de facto war footing.
