Following the terrorist attack in Manhattan, US President Donald Trump said he would work to cancel the annual Green Card Lottery program, which led to the arrival in the United States of the Uzbek terrorist Saipolu Syepov.

"I'm going to ask the Congress to start working right away, so we can get rid of this plan," Trump said during a cabinet meeting at the White House. "I will take the necessary steps to protect our people," Trump said.

The day after the attack, the president added: "We have to be tougher and smarter, and much less politically correct, we are so politically correct that we are afraid to do something."

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed reports that Sapip arrived in the United States from Uzbekistan in 2010 following the State Department lottery, which aims to diversify the origin of green card holders and grant visas to citizens from low-income countries.

The program grants 50,000 green card visas every year. In 2016, eight million people participated in the lottery around the world. Only 35 Israelis won the lottery, compared to 1,700 Uzbeks and 2,700 Iranians.

"America is mourning the victims and praying for them," he said, adding that the terrorist who killed eight was "alive" and said he would consider sending him to Guantánamo Bay prison. "I will definitely consider that," the president clarified.
