Why did Trump pardon turkeys and what should I know about Thanksgiving Day?

in news •  7 years ago  (edited)

Every fourth Thursday in November in the United States is celebrated Thanksgiving.

The tradition originated in 1621, when the first settlers from the Plymouth colony in the territory of the present state of Massachusetts arranged a celebration to thank God for the harsh winter and native Indians who taught them how to grow the crop in local conditions.

In 1863, the decree of President Abraham Lincoln established his annual celebration on the last Thursday of November, and in 1941 by the decision of the Congress - on the fourth Thursday of November.

Thanksgiving is a family holiday, therefore, according to tradition, several generations of Americans gather for a solemn family dinner.

Many fly to the other end of the country to see their relatives.
