Cher Georgia's mother passed away at the age of 69
Cher's mother, Georgia Holt, has passed away. She was 96 years old.
The 76-year-old musician revealed the news on Twitter early Saturday morning. "Mom is gone," Cher tweeted alongside a sad-face emoji.
The news comes three months after the pop star revealed on the social media platform that her mother had been hospitalized with pneumonia in September.
"It's getting better," Cher wrote at the time, adding in a follow-up tweet.
Cher previously opened up about her mom's health when she told people she gets tested for COVID-19 "all the time" and tried to be "very careful" with her elderly mom amid the 2020 holiday season.
"We have a little bubble that we've had this whole time," she said. "We wear masks, and there aren't many of us around. It's my sister, my brother-in-law, my mom, and my assistant. And we're staying apart."
She added, "I also have to be careful because I suffer from asthma... I have various health problems."
Holt - an actress, model and singer - was born in Arkansas in 1926 the daughter of 13-year-old Linda Inez Jolly and 21-year-old Roy Malloy Crouch.
She eventually landed roles in film and television after moving to Los Angeles, from 1950's Watching The Birdie to I Love Lucy. She also appeared on The Mike Douglas Show and The Merv Griffin Show in 1979 and 1980, and eventually released her debut album Honky Tonk Woman in 2013, which she recorded in the 1980s.
Back in 2013, on the release of Lifetime's one-hour special Dear Mom, Love Cher, the musician talked to people about the lessons she's learned from Holt throughout her life — especially growing up with her sister, Georgene LaPierre-Partilac, in the San Fernando Valley.
The documentary told Holt's story about Holt herself and several of her relatives—including Cher and Partillac, as well as her grandchildren Chaz Bono and Elijah Blue Allman.
"She wouldn't give my sister and me advice because, honestly, she knew we'd never take it," Cher said of her mother. "Instead, we learned about life by listening to her talk about the things she did wrong and the things she did right."
When Cher was young, she said she remembered being "very loved" by her mother and friends, with Holt herself having an "amazing wardrobe". Since Cher was "really strong" she and Holt "fight a lot".
"I did two things like run away when I was 11," Cher told People at the time. "I hopped on the train with my friends. I was just very adventurous - but I was never disrespectful. You couldn't have put up with it."
Holt — who Cher reveals has always "stressed the importance of making sure the person you're with is the person you love" — has been married and divorced six times, but "might probably only have been married once" if she had grown up in a different environment. Sher said.
Georgia and John Scheer in 1946 had another daughter, actress Georgianne Lapierre, with her husband, John Southnall.
Cher said in an interview to promote her 2013 documentary “Dear Mom, Love Cher”: “My mom is just like Rocky. She never gives up!”
“I had a little bit of an issue with her around Sonny [Bono], but it didn't take me long to get over it,” Cher told PEOPLE. "I listen first before I pass judgment, so I can always talk to her about my romances."
