Only 16 hours after the resignation of the old president of South Africa the country has a new head of state: The Parliament in Cape Town has elected Cyril Ramaphosa for president.
One day after the resignation of South Africa's President Jacob Zuma, his former second in command Cyril Ramaphosa has been elected as the new head of state.
As there was no opposition in parliament, Ramaphosa is considered elected without a vote, as the president of the South African Constitutional Court, Mogoeng Mogoeng, said.
Ramaphosas predecessor Zuma had resigned on Wednesday evening as president. Thus, his Vice Ramaphosa was already in charge at the office. Zuma is accused of personal enrichment and corruption. In addition, the ex-president is blamed for the economic misery of the country.
Zuma had denied all allegations until the very end and excluded a resignation in the afternoon and described the treatment by his party as "unfair". The governing party ANC had called him to resign after a meeting of the Executive Committee the previous night.
After the election Ramaphosas the Parliament started to applause and sing. A smaller opposition party had left in protest before the vote.

and we were so hopeful that the ANC was going to be miraculously renewed, but so far they are the same. Not accepting any blame for the Zuma presidency. Before Gigaba was Finance minister he fast tracked and approved the Gupta brothers citizenship, allowing them to pillage the state coffers . Now he is delivering the budget speech and will probably announce increased taxes on ordinary people, all battling to cope with expenses of surviving a country with JUNK status.
