The two assassins blew themselves up on Al-Tajjaran Square in the center of the capital. The detonations occurred in the immediate vicinity of a group of construction workers, eyewitnesses reported.
It was not until Saturday that a suicide bombing with several dead had taken place in Baghdad.

Such attacks in Iraq are mostly perpetrated by the jihadist militia "Islamic State" (IS). In December, the Iraqi government proclaimed the "end of the war" against ISIS after the jihadists were expelled from all major cities in the country. IS fighters are still active in the country.

In the summer of 2016, more than 280 people were killed in Baghdad's most devastating jihad attack, when a car bomb exploded outside a mall. In November of the same year, a suicide bomber south of the capital took more than 70 people to his death when he detonated an explosives-laden truck at a gas station.
