🗞 EU Commission: Facebook and Twitter violate consumer rights

in news •  7 years ago

Facebook and Twitter have already given in to the pressure of the European Commission and formulated their terms and conditions slightly more consumer-friendly. But Brussels is not satisfied with that yet.

The social networks Facebook and Twitter fail to comply with EU rules protecting their users. This emerges from a paper of the EU Commission, which will be published on Thursday in Brussels. It says the Brussels consumer advocates complain that Twitter continues to change its terms and conditions without informing the users.

In addition, Facebook and Twitter delete content uploaded by users without notifying them. Since consumer protection is a matter for the member states of the EU, possible penalties could only be imposed there and not by the EU itself, it said.

The Commission's paper lists changes that US social networks have been under pressure from EU authorities since last year. Among other things, EU consumer authorities pushed social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Google+ in March to revise inadmissible clauses in the terms and conditions and to grant European users e.g the right to sue in their home country. This point was fulfilled as well as the labeling of advertising and sponsored content.

According to the paper, Google Plus has met all the requirements of the EU authorities. Facebook and Twitter haven't.
