WTH happened in the world this week!? An Apolitical Global Event Blog #1
Subject: Beer taps drying up and much more
Welcome everyone, to the sunday edition of the @Sensatus blog, where I take all the heat and energy produced by the worlds partisans, kick it in its face, and forget all about it.
First on the docket today, is a horrifying new story coming straight from the International Wine and Spirits Record itself. The results of their survey is terrible to behold: "Cider sales went in reverse, down 1.5% after several years of growth. The overall contraction of international alcohol sales is far greater than the average dip of 0.3% in the previous five years. The IWSR market report for 2016 found global wine sales to be relatively flat, down 0.1% and spirits consumption grew 0.3%. UK gin makers could be boosted as the so-called gin revival continued, with sales of the iconic British tipple up 3.7% globally. Although global GDP increased 3.5% in 2016, according to the IMF, and economic growth usually correlates with increased alcohol consumption several major economies, China, Russia and Brazil all faced an economic slowdown or recession. Beer sales in China fell 4.2%, were down 5.3% in Brazil and dipped 7.8% in Russia."
Next and in a steeper downward spiral of sadness, over 1000 retail stores have closed in the past WEEK alone. Luxury retailer Michael Kors announced it would be closing over 100 locations, and electronics giant Radio Shack closed 1,000 locations across America. The retail industry, which represents $5 trillion in economic impact, has changed significantly over the past several years, and not in a good way. More than 100,000 retail workers have lost their jobs since October 2016. Maybe those 100,000 users will find a home here on Steemit?
Finally, a young woman from my home state has won the spelling bee with the totally not unused word "Marocain", for those who are not in the know, the word Marocain is a dress fabric of ribbed crepe, made of silk or wool or both, found in... you guessed it Marracco. Anywho, young Ananya Vinay, will take home $40,000, a $2,500 savings bond, reference books and a Kindle e-reader. Where was the golden ticket that is the spelling bee when I was growing up..
Thats about all for today folks, I hope you all enjoyed a tiny break from the chaos and political drama that has engulfed the world. I was hoping for some more funny stories this week, but hey, beer drying up (who thought that would happen?) and the death of boring old retail is slightly interesting isn't it? Haha anyways, thank you all as always for reading my blog and upvoting it so a poor college grad can claim he is making his way in life.
If you would like to donate to keep the caffeine tap on, you may do so and they are much appreciated!
