In the small peaceful country of Suriname, on the north coast of South America. Small-scale piracy has been a fact of life, but mostly consisted of robbing the victims of their daily catches and equipment but brutal violence was rarely heard of.
In a turn of events last week, 4 small boats were robbed and the crew severely abused with machetes and then thrown overboard. The total group consisted of 20 fishermen from Surinamese and Guyanese nationalities. 4 men managed to swim ashore before being picked up by fellow fisherman, the other 16 men are still missing and feared dead. The survivors told police and the Coast Guard that the assailants, suspected of coming from neighboring Guyana because of their accents. A massive search and rescue is still searching for the fishermen but with every passing hour, the chances of finding survivors has dimmed.
Local fishermen have been too fearful to go out to sea to work since the attack, this could lead to a negative impact for local fish markets and eventually impact the revenue stream of multiple businesses and families.
