in news •  7 years ago

CNN reported that President Donald Trump pardoned former Sheriff Joe Arpaio on Friday, August 25th 2017. Arpaio was facing a possible jail sentence of up to six months in jail for violating the judge's orders regarding the way he pursued undocumented Latinos. The Sheriff was convicted of criminal contempt. The President announced on Twitter that he had pardoned Arpaio, calling him an American patriot. Civil rights groups were unhappy with the verdict, as are many Americans. The mayor of Phoenix, AZ has even weighed in on the situation, saying, ""Joe Arpaio illegally targeted and terrorized Latino families. Our community voted him out of power. Donald Trump can't change that." Sen. John McCain commented as well, stating that ""The President has the authority to make this pardon, but doing so at this time undermines his claim for the respect of rule of law as Mr. Arpaio has shown no remorse for his actions."

The Sheriff is 85 years old.
