The United Nations and several countries have called for an end to the war in Ukraine, without mentioning the apparently stalled peace talks.
The Secretary-General of the International Organization, Antonio Guterres, reiterated during a meeting of the Security Council organized at Washington's request, that "the invasion of Ukraine by Russia is a violation of its territorial integrity and the Charter of the United Nations."
"This must stop, for the good of the Ukrainian people, (the people) of Russia and the world at large," he added.Guterres recently went to Moscow and Kiev to push for the evacuation of civilians from Mariupol, hundreds of whom were able to leave the city.
Most members of the Security Council, including China, the United States, Ireland, France and Mexico, have called for "an end to the war."
Chinese Ambassador Zhang Jun said that "only dialogue and negotiations will allow a cessation of hostilities," criticizing the sending of weapons to Ukraine, while his Kenyan counterpart Martin Kimani called for "mediation" by Guterres.
For his part, the Ukrainian ambassador, Sergei Kislitsya, stressed "the need to seize all opportunities to reach peace."Diplomats said Norway and Mexico, both non-permanent members of the council, had submitted a text to their partners expressing "strong support for the good offices of the Secretary-General in the search for a peaceful solution".
But it remains uncertain whether the council will adopt this text. If adopted, it would be the first sign of the council's unity since the start of the war in Ukraine on February 24.
Asked if Moscow would agree to the text, Russian Deputy Ambassador Dmitry Polyansky told AFP: "We have time."
