It actually started in 1917 with the Committee on Public Information. Another of Woodrow Wilson's many gifts was our first official propaganda department directed at the American public. As an added bonus it gave us Eddie Bernays. He was a propagandist who was the driving force behind modern advertising and "public relations," a coin he actually coined himself when businesses didn't like him calling it propaganda.

And of course, the Nazis excelled at propaganda and fake news. The Americans didn't just inherit all the advanced Nazi technologies (military, scientific), they also inherited Goebbels teachings. As the saying goes, the student has surpassed the teacher!
