Donald Trump's retweets have caused a lowkey diplomatic crisis

in news •  7 years ago

In response to Donald Trump retweeting three videos from the far-right British party Britain First and subsequently berating Theresa May on Twitter for responding to his madness, the UK ambassador to the US has met with senior White House officials in order to try and restore order between the two countries.

According to Reuters:

Britain’s ambassador to the United States discussed a row over retweets sent by President Donald Trump with senior White House officials on Wednesday, a British government source said on Thursday.

The source, who asked not to be named due to the sensitivity of the issue, did not give further details of the discussion.

It's one of those situations where you have to pinch yourself in disbelief that this Trump administration is real. This diplomatic crisis that is brewing is the kind of thing that is generally reserved for nations who have dropped chemical weapons or have committed crimes against humanity: in this case, it's over one man's Twitter account. Absolute madness.

Sadiq Khan response

The mayor of London Sadiq Khan claimed that Trump's recklessness was a 'betrayal of the special relationship' between the two countries.

He said:

"It beggars belief that the President of our closest ally doesn't see that his support of this extremist group actively undermines the values of tolerance and diversity that makes Britain so great."

Sadiq Khan has long held the position that Trump should be denied a state visit to the UK, something that every US President has enjoyed. He has so far been unsuccessful in his attempts though, the Queen offered Trump a visit and he has accepted, but not yet set a date.

Trump's Twitter account was even discussed in UK Parliament today

And there you have the Trump Card.

London and the UK should really ponder their freedom of speech laws.
