The illusory truth effect

in news •  6 years ago

The illusory truth effect is the idea that if you repeat something often enough, people will slowly start to believe it’s true. Sounds about right, considering all the times we’ve blindly trusted an old wives’ tale or a much-retweeted factoid.

But a new study has revealed that the illusory truth effect is much stronger than we imagined. Because it turns out that even if a person has prior knowledge disproving a lie they’re being told, they’ll still believe the lie if it’s repeated enough.

Hi, Ed - another good one from you, so thanks. Are you familiar with this Galen Winsor talk? Regarding the Carl Sagan segment: We may be experiencing the illusory truth effect in action - it seems possible that a lie was repeated for years about the existence of nuclear weapons. Galen says there are none. Right up your alley, if you haven't already seen it.

Thanks heaps, no I have not listened to it - but that will change tonight when I watch it thanks so much :)

Turns out that is a different talk than the one I was thinking of, and I can't find the other! Still, there are a couple of good documentaries making the case that nuclear weapons don't exist. We love fear porn!
