Let's Talk About the Migrant Caravan

in news •  6 years ago

For two weeks, throngs of people have trudged north, crossing first from Honduras into Guatemala and then on to Mexico, bound for the United States border. They have spent nights in sprawling makeshift camps or in churches and schools, washing their clothes in rivers and relying on donations from locals.

As their numbers grew into the thousands, so did attention to their journey, first making news locally and then internationally, as President Trump and Republican politicians took aim.

The conversation about the migrant caravan has been characterized by misinformation at times, some of which has spread widely. Here are some important things to know about the group’s origin, who is involved and where it is headed.

The group is currently around 7,000 people, 2,300 of them being children.

The migrants travel about 20 miles a day on average, and are not expected to reach the border before the midterm elections.

Participants have been subjected to conditions which range from blisters and swoillen feet, sunburn, conjunctivitis, and respiratory illness. The conditions on the road are less than ideal, and many migrants have turned back because of the danger and hardship.

Overall, I feel for these individuals, and their plight is very real., They want to find a better life, but I fear that they won't find it here in a nation that is so heavily against anyone in their situation.

We saw a similar thing on a border between Ecuador and Colombia. People are running away from Venezuela. It's so sad that own country tries to burry own citizens alive.

I'm sorry that your country is seeing hard times like that. If I could I would help them. No one deserves to be at the mercy of their leaders in that way.

what you think that will happen when if they reach a country like usa, do you think they will open their doors like the rest of the countrys? or they will shut them away?

i think they will not let them pass

Most likely they'll be stuck in Mexico. Hopefully they can start a better life there free from the tyranny they were escaping. I'm not completely sure what will happen, though. Things are crazy now and there's a lot of hate going around.

I wonder how big the group will be once/if it reaches the US border. From what I’ve been reading the group is getting smaller everyday.

I'm guessing somewhere in the ballpark of 2 to 3 thousand. That's just a guess, though.
