One year after the scandal, the Cambridge Analytica case remains a big rock in Facebook's shoe.

The Italian data protection guarantor imposed a fine of 1 million € on the social network on Friday 28 June for its involvement in the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

The government agency said in a statement Friday that it had determined that 57 Italians had downloaded the Thisisyourdigitallife app through a Facebook login, and as a result, the app acquired data of nearly 215,000 Italian users.

Britain’s data protection watchdog concluded that Cambridge Analytica improperly harvested Facebook data to aid Donald Trump’s successful 2016 presidential campaign.

214,077 Italians

According to the Italian authority, 57 Italians had downloaded the Thisisyourdigitallife app that collects their friends' data on Facebook, without their consent, so that a total of 214,077 Italian social network users had their personal data acquired without their consent.

As a reminder, Cambridge Analytica found itself in 2018 in the midst of a scandal that seriously damaged Facebook's reputation.

The company has always denied that it collected and used the personal data of 87 million Facebook users for political purposes without their consent, through an application of psychological tests.

In Italy, more than €11 million in fines

Facebook said in a statement that it is focusing on protecting people’s privacy, will review the watchdog agency’s decision and will “continue to engage constructively with their concerns”.

Last December, the Italian competition authority imposed a fine of €10 million on Facebook, accusing it of selling its users' data without properly informing them.

Elsewhere in Europe, the British regulator (ICO) fined Facebook £500,000 (€565,000) last November in the Cambridge Analytica case. In Spain, the group was fined €1.2 million in September 2017 by the Local Data Protection Agency (AEPD). In the United States, a multi-billion dollar fine imposed by the federal regulator would hang in Facebook's face.
