Microsoft's online storage service will soon have space for sensitive documents, accessible only with a second authentication factor.
Users of the Microsoft OneDrive storage service will soon be able to take advantage of a new security feature called "Personal Vault". This is a storage space integrated into OneDrive and dedicated to particularly sensitive documents.
This space is only accessible after giving a second authentication factor, such as scanning a fingerprint or sending a single-use code. "Your files locked in Personal Vault have an extra layer of security that further protects them in the event that someone has access to your account or device," Microsoft explains in a blog note.
The daily use of safe is simple. At the level of the graphical interface, it is accessible as a simple folder, through a special icon. The mobile application also allows you to directly save any photos or scans that the user does not want to see lying around in their classic album.
After a certain period of inactivity, access to the Personal Vault locks automatically, requiring a second authentication factor to be entered again.
While this new feature strengthens access control for sensitive files, there is no change in confidentiality. The data stored in OneDrive is not encrypted end-to-end. They are only encrypted during transit between the terminal and Microsoft servers with the TLS protocol ("data in transit"), then encrypted for storage ("data at rest") with the 256-bit AES algorithm.
The encryption keys are therefore held by Microsoft. Those who want to store their data in the cloud with end-to-end encryption will have to go elsewhere, for example to Tresorit, SpiderOak or Sync providers.
The Personal Vault function will be gradually deployed worldwide by the end of the year, starting with Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
Finally, Microsoft is taking advantage of this announcement to double the storage volume of its "OneDrive 50 GB" package to 2 euros per month. Users will soon benefit from this bonus, at no extra cost.
As for Office 365 subscribers who currently have 1TB, they will see their storage volume increase in the coming months in increments of 200GB, provided they pay $1.99 more each month.
