Now that the upcoming USB4 spec promises to “adopt the Thunderbolt 3 protocol,” some hope it means an end to our international nightmare of USB confusion.
USB 4 devices on the market faster than expected.
Over the summer, we should see an increase in USB speeds with the adoption of the USB 3.2 standard.
This promises maximum theoretical transfers of around 20 Gb/s., i.e. a doubling of the speeds authorized by USB 3.1 Gen 2, which was adopted in** 2013**.
Interesting flows, but obviously insufficient for the industry, which even seems to be accelerating things.
Indeed, according to the USB Promoter Group, work on the USB 4 specifications has progressed considerably. As proof, the organization is now talking about completing the process before the end of the summer of 2019.... in a few weeks' time.
Summary table of USB specifications (c) PCWorld
Such an acceleration is the promise of a much faster availability to manufacturers and still according to the USB Promoter Group, this should make it possible to see the first USB 4 compatible devices arrive next year... even if no further details are given.
It should therefore be remembered that USB 4 promises to further accelerate speeds since it is based on Intel's Thunderbolt 3 technology. This should result in data rates of up to 40 Gb/s, or nearly 5 Gb/s. The use of the USB-C interface is obviously on the agenda and backwards compatibility should be wide: USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt 3, so a lot of good news!
What’s the short version of what I need to know about USB4 and Thunderbolt 3? USB4’s embrace of Thunderbolt 3 could mean less confusion about what works with which. However, it’s still up to the manufacturer to implement the spec, and it’s possible some Thunderbolt 3 devices will be left in the cold.
