If you are in a round earth, then you must have felt the frustration of arguing with someone from the flat earth. Whatever rebuttal you think of as part of a NASA conspiracy.
In this 21st century, did he and the other flat folks really seriously believe in the theory? If so, how does this happen?
Although their theory sounds improbable to your ears and head, but flat earthen beliefs are not a surprise for psychologists like Karen Douglas.
Psychologists from the University of Kent, United Kingdom, who study the psychology of conspiracy theorists say that the beliefs of flat earth follow other conspiracy theories he has learned.

Quoted from Live Science May 30, 2017, Douglas said, I think these people really believe that the earth is flat. I do not see any sign that they are making up the idea for any other reason.
Douglas then explains that in general, conspiracy theories have two of the same characteristics. First, they are an alternative theory of an event or a serious problem. Second, they usually provide some kind of explanation as to why the truth of the event or problem should be covered.
"One of the attractions of conspiracy theory is the ability to explain a major event without the need for complete details. The strength is precisely in the fact that these theories have no definite clarity, "he said.
However, the tenacity and self-confidence of the earth peoples is flat in arguing to make their theory more interesting than it should be.
"If you are faced with a minority view expressed in an intelligent way and the speaker has a very strong opinion, then the theory can be very influential. Psychologists call this a minority influence, "Douglas said.
However, there is one difference of flat earth people with people who believe in other conspiracy theories.
In a study published in the American Journal of Political Science in 2014, two political researchers from the University of Chicago, Eric Oliver and Tom Wood, found that half of US society believe at least one conspiracy theory.
To Live Science, Oliver said that conspiracy theories originate from human habits of believing in unseen forces. This is called magical thinking.
However, if many other conspiracy theorists also adopt supernatural peripheral theories, flat earth people usually only believe in the uneven shape of the earth.
"If they are like other conspiracy theorists, they should also show a tendency towards magical thinking such as believing UFOs, ESPs, ghosts, and other invisible forces. However, flat earth peoples are not so they are also an anomaly among US people who believe in conspiracy theories, "explains Douglas.
At certain times, thousands of satellites converge on our heads at heights ranging from several hundred miles and tens of thousands of miles.
However, from man-made things in outer space that are bigger than your fist, orbiting satellites is a minority. About 95 percent of what is out there is space trash: an uncontrolled space station, rocket sections still in use, dead satellites, missing astronaut tools, and more.
This dangerous orbital waste moves about 10 times faster than fast-moving bullets and takes a long time to get back to earth.
"These debris can survive there for hundreds of years," said Bill Ailor, an aerospace engineer and atmospheric breaker specialist, to Business Insider.
It was getting worse. A collision in space could cause thousands of new aircraft to become high-speed and uncontrollable, which could threaten other spacecraft.
Meanwhile, perhaps 170 million pieces of debris larger than 1 millimeter-like paint spots and explosive bolt pieces-move around Earth at tens of thousands of miles per hour, according to the European Space Agency.
Various countries have learned over the years that when they create debris, it can cause risks to their own systems, which can also harm other parties, "said Ailor, who works for the nonprofit Aerospace Corporation.
The chart below, created by Business Insider using data from Space-Track.org, shows the top 10 countries and organizations with the most-traced objects around Earth in October 2017.
The chart shows that Russia has the largest object in space today, with more than 6,500 objects. However, this is not the largest contributor to space junk, shown in red.
The United States has the title of the dirtiest country in space today. Russia has 3,961 pieces of space debris that can be detected compared to 3,999 pieces of trash that can be tracked in orbit created by American activity.
China has just boosted the space program, but was third with 3,475 pieces of space trash. This is because China destroyed one of its own satellites in an anti-satellite weapons test in 2007.
This controversial step directly makes more than 2,300 trash pieces traceable, more than 35,000 pieces larger than the picture, and perhaps hundreds of thousands of pieces too small to trace.
****How To Clean Space****
Removing an old spacecraft from orbit is the key to preventing the formation of space junk. In addition, many space agencies and companies are now building spacecraft with their alienation system.
However, Ailor and others are keen to encourage the development of new technologies and methods that can trap, wrap, pull, and clean up old and uncontrolled items that are already there and continue to pose a threat.
"I have proposed something like XPRIZE or Grand Challenge, where you will identify three spacecraft and reward the country or organization of the aircraft owners to clean it up," he said.
The ultimate goal is to prevent an alarming scenario known as Kessler Syndrome: when many items are in space, one collision leads to another, and the collision causes more things-waste space with so much dirt-that it becomes very risky to leave Earth.
The biggest obstacle in conquering the debris is man.
"It's not just technical issues, people can actually be the cause of the space junk," said Ailor. "No other country has permission to touch the US satellite, for example, if we follow the satellite, it could be considered an act of war," he added.
Ailor says that one needs to unite countries to agree on a treaty outlining the law on the rights to save inanimate or uncontrolled objects in space.
"There needs to be something in which countries and commercial authorities have the authority to pursue something," he said.
Great piece @vonnaputra! A lot of valuable information in there that I didn't already know. I read in a paper recently, however, that the debris in space isn't really that big of an issue considering the spaces in between all objects floating in space is very immense. These spaces are why the universe has managed to survive this long so maybe one collision couldn't lead to a catastrophe through a domino effect by the end of it?
Keep writing though, loved the piece! :)
