Dems lose again in most expensive house race in history - GOP’s Karen Handel Beats Democrat Jon Ossoff in Georgia House Race

in news •  8 years ago

Republican Karen Handel, a former Georgia secretary of state, beat Democrat Jon Ossoff, a former congressional aide, in the most expensive House race in history and the most significant test of the two parties’ political strength since Mr. Trump’s election.

The Associated Press called Ms. Handel the winner.

Republicans had invested heavily in the campaign, with President Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and other party luminaries flocking to the Atlanta suburbs to bolster Ms. Handel’s candidacy. Donors and outside groups poured more than $23 million into Ms. Handel’s campaign, and still the GOP had faced the politically embarrassing prospect of losing a district the party has held for almost four decades.

The Democrats pored even more money into Jon Ossoff's campaign a record 31 million in funds and yet they still lost.

In South Carolina, Republican Ralph Norman held the House seat vacated by Mick Mulvaney, Mr. Trump’s budget director, but by a far closer margin than expected. Mr. Norman defeated Democrat Archie Parnell, a former Goldman Sachs executive

I'm surprised the Democrats are still fielding corporate execs against the Republicans. Didn't they realize Dems want more Bernie Sanders types in government than Hillary types. He should of been the nominee but Hillary and the DNC stole it.

The Democrats are in desperate need of reform, cleaning house and getting rid of the establishment types in favor of more populist candidates that listen to voters. The Republicans have slowly been reforming since the tea party rallies back in 2010 and Trump is a result of those moves away from the establishment in favor of the people.

Better luck next time Dems maybe you'll field actual liberal candidates in 2018 and not these Goldman Sachs execs.

Absolutely agree. After being a Bernie Sanders Delegate for my state, I have lost complete faith in the democratic party. The death of the DNC will hopefully give life to a third party.

I totally agree hopefully this is a wake-up call for the DNC.

Ya it might be easier to just join a third party and start from scratch than fight the corrupt DNC.

Yeah people don't forget! I think the stench of corruption will follow.

I heard Ossoff had spent a total of $50 million. Not close to H.Clinton's waste, but still a sizable chunk for the race.

Total spent for the race was ~$50 million. This includes the amount spent by Republicans/Handle. Even still, this is going to be a tough loss for the Democrats to overcome. They will have to find some other way to build momentum if they want to have any chance of taking control of the House in 2018. This isn't a great win for Republicans though. They were supposed to win this race, and they wasted a lot of money and manpower on a race that wasn't supposed to be close. Interesting times we live in and the road to 2018 will be a roller coaster.

I would not be surprised if it was 50 million

I couldn't be more removed from this race being that I'm Wayy out of that district, but for what it's worth I had also passively read some articles stating that Ossoff had been vilified and alienated by the Dems when he dipped in the polls.

3...2...1... Democrats rioting in the streets and blaming Russia for Meddling in the elections.

haha, I'm sure they are looking for a way to blame the loss on anyone else besides themselves.

And that's why the lost they're so ingenuous to point that the American people are becoming aware of their misconception and hate towards American culture.

Just as the Trump prophecy predicted. They will spend billions, let them spend it, for it will be wasting their money!

It's to bad the bankers can just rig markets or create money out of thin air if they are running low on cash.
