Is The End Of Facebook Coming Soon? Is That Good For Steemit?

in news •  7 years ago

Recent site statistics released show that Facebook is on a decline, but is this rare or just the start of a major shift to platforms like Steemit?

Facebook started on February, 4th 2004 and has grown to over a billion active users a month. It is incredible to see how far the site has come, but we may have seen the peak.

Recent numbers released by Parse.ly on external referral traffic shows a sharp decline on Facebook. Down almost 50% since last year. See the details here.

We already know that many millennials use Facebook, but are not limited to Facebook like most of their parents. There is another unique trend happening though. Generation Z, children born fro 1995-2000's are not turning to the platform. Instead they are gravitating to other social media.

Facebook has become a cesspool of political discord and advertisings for training classes. The Facebook has come a long way, and maybe it's heyday is behind it.

If it's best days are behind it, then that creates a major hole in the social media marketplace. In the future, people will spend more time online, not less, so what will take its place?

Of course places like Instagram are seeing a bigger spike, but what about the next age of social media? Places like Steemit and Appics? Not only do the blockchain social media offer a chance to generate income off of your posts, but they are also much less invasive and much more private.

Privacy is going to be more important to each generation as the dangers of being online increase with the technology. It makes sense that people will drift away from Instagram too for similar reasons.

As the old model of social media dies off, the new model that will replace it will be Steemit... at least I hope so. I can't say for certain, but I hope that the idea behind Steemit will fuel the next gen social media. Meaning, you get paid to post and curate, it's done on the blockchain and the information isn't sold to other businesses.

Personally I do think we are in a social media shift and I do see a decline coming from Facebook. It will be interesting to see what comes next and where those people go. I'm hoping they can find a great place like Steemit.

*Appics is a new ICO launching in March that is a social media platform built on the Steem blockchain. More info here

Nice write up. I completely agree with you. FB is in decline and yes it has become a political discord. Privacy is much more important than people realize, that is why I am all for Steem. This is the first I'm hearing about Appics. I'll have to do some DD on it. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the reply and I couldn't agree more. Appics is very exciting. Use my referral link if you want. https://ico.appics.com/login?referral=uEt2kak4

It looks cool and we should get an airdrop of the tokens to match our Steem holdings. I'm excited about it. The ICO launches March 28th I think. Let me know what your thoughts are on it.
Thanks again for reading and the awesome reply.

Cool. Thanks for the link. I just signed up using your link. I'm guessing you did the Steem Bounty campaign?

I dont think Facebook will end, i see alot of people going for instagram (what is a facebook company xD) but is allready too much popular and adopted to end but i see alot more interest in platforms like steemit.
Thanks for the post, always good content

yeah I agree, it won't end. I do see it declining as younger generations distance themselves from the gold standard of social media. You are right, Instagram is still Facebook company. lol. We can't get away from them. I really appreciate the reply and you taking the time to read. Have a great day johny!

Finally!! Someone once told me whenever you leave Facebook you never feel better than when you went on!! Just as long as the negative people stay on Facebook and don’t come to steem or realize we are all about positive remarks!! We need more Steemians in our world...not Facebookers!

lol, I agree. Finally. I love the comment, "we need more steemians in our world... not facebookers." That is so true. thanks for reading and the great reply.

How crazy, I was literally thinking that facebook will soon be over as steemit gets more popular. 10 minutes later I see this post! haha great read as usual

lol, thank you so much. I don't think Steemit will ever be as big as Facebook is right now, but I also don't think that is a bad thing. lol Thanks for reading.

The Appics thing seems interesting.

Facebook is declining. That is true. I see less and less posts from my 'friends'. Maybe they have moved on to other venues. And I can see the appeals of sites like Steemit. You get rewarded for your posts. Although it may not be easy, it is an incentive. You are already posting on FB anyway, and you get nothing for your posts. But I think FB will still be around for a few more years, albeit less popular and lesser users. It is still a good place to keep in touch with family and relatives - stuff like that. Unless, Mark Zuckerberg turn FB into something like Steemit. Anyway, we shall see.

I haven't done any kind (not even superficial ) of research on this but from the little I've seen it seems like the younger generation is using FB more as a 'reply all' or 'send all' instead of using email. I've also seen it used for messaging by kids. The people I've seen using it for traditional journalling or as a soap box tend to be older than (approximately) 30.

It occurs to me that parents have probably feeling pretty protective of their kids for a bunch of years now with respect to the dangers of over-sharing and online stalking via social media and it's turned kids away from that kind of committed/permanent record. The kids are using chat rooms, IM, and Twitter.
