A sudden victory for the Democratic candidate in the Alabama elections and a severe blow to Trump

The Democratic Party candidate won a surprise victory by more than 20,000 votes over his Republican rival, the US presidential candidate, in Alabama's Senate elections. The win was a severe blow to Trump, who gave full support to the Republican candidate, who appears to have failed to beat charges against him for sexual harassment.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrat Doug Jones on Tuesday unexpectedly beat Republican rival Roy Moore in Alabama's Senate election, which saw fierce competition and a failure for US President Donald Trump's candidate to go beyond charges of sexual harassment.
The Democratic victory, in the most serious election rounds in 2017 in the United States and in a conservative state deep into the US south, is a severe blow to President Trump, who gave full support to Republican Moore after initially hesitating despite the sexual scandals that plagued him.

With 100 percent of Alabama polling stations counted, former Attorney General Jones scored 49.9 percent of the votes, compared to 48.4 percent for Moore, a difference of more than 20,000 votes.

But Moore refused to concede defeat and told his supporters in Montgomery, "When the result is so close it does not end," adding, "We have to wait for a signal from God."
