Oil River protectorate- do you actually know the formation of Nigeria

in nigeria •  7 years ago  (edited)
Hello friends, I decided to share this beautiful topic I had in class today HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF NIGERIA yea it sounds boring right? Well actually it is very interesting and I am sure you will gain one or two things from it. Trust me, I won't make you feel bored smiles

Before Flora Shaw named this beautiful nation Nigeria, what was it called?

Why did the british people come to govern Nigeria?

How was the Northern and Southern protectorate/colony formed?

Was Nigeria described as a nation?

The nation "Nigeria" was described as a geographical expression, it wasn't seen as a nation. It was formerly a comelgoration where different scattered groups, different history backgrounds and so.on were. The nation "Nigeria" is a british making and it started with the annexation of Lagos in 1861.
Some countries were in need of raw materials so they had a meeting at Berlin in 1884-85 and the British people concluded to try the geographical area of which it is now known as Nigeria. So they named the area OIL RIVER PROTECTORATE/NIGER COAST. So this was when colonialism started.

Oil rivers protectorate

Around July 1886, Britain granted a charter to a British company known as Goldier's but later changed it name to Royal Niger company. This company was given the right to trade and to govern the geographical area Oil rivers protectorate.
On 1898, a female agent from the Royal Oil company christianed the area "Nigeria" and the female agent's name is Flora Shaw. Nigeria was seen as a nation, this was when Nigeria became a nation, then in January 4, 1900 the nation “Nigeria”was divided, the Northern and the Southern so the Northern area was named protectorate of Northern Nigeria.

NORTHERN NIGERIA

and the remaining areas in the south was named the protectorate of Southern Nigeria.

SOUTHERN NIGERIA

Nigeria was divided into three different entitities: colony of Lagos, protectorate of Southern Nigeria and protectorate of Northern Nigeria. Lord Lugard was an agent of Royal Niger company was appointed the high commissioner of the Northern protectorate.
On 1st May of 1906 colony of Lagos was merged with the southern protectorate so they became unified, so Lagos was the headquarter of Southern protectorate.
I hope my grammar is not too much.
On January 1st 1914, the Northern and Southern protectorate were algamated as the colony of Nigeria so they all became one and under Nigeria.
That same year Sir (Lord) Lugard was appointed the first Governor general of Nigeria.

I am a proud citizen of Nigeria and I love history.

Hello @plojslydia

You have done a great job to have come up with this topic, which is based on different entities that later come together to form what we know today.

Personally, I knew about Northern and Southern Protectorates but never Oil River. This is certainly one of the several benefits of being a Steemian. In this program, education is eternal. As widely read as I am on things that borders on Nigeria history, yet this is unknown to me.

I appreciate this piece in no small measure. Thanks
