My Nikon D7200 - A Review

in nikon •  5 years ago

I’ve had the Nikon D7200 DSLR for over three years, almost since it came out into the market, and I must admit it is the best camera I have owned. Given that I have never owned (but have borrowed lol) a full frame, fully professional camera, I still think this is as close as one can get without spending millions upon millions* seemingly.
So let’s do a quick overview of the good and the bad with this camera.

The good:

  • Great low-light performance
  • Auto focus subject tracking through the viewfinder that actually works
  • 51-point AF coverage
  • Light body, relatively speaking
  • Battery life is A+, plus the available battery grip is a must have
  • Wi-Fi capabilities
  • Auto ISO feature while in M mode
  • Amazing image quality for the price

The bad:

  • Video capability not impressive with jumpy autofocus
  • Wi-Fi although functional, not consistent and limited
  • No aperture control in movie mode
  • Bulky body overall

So based on what the pros and cons are in my opinion, I think it’s clear that I am not impressed with the video function this camera offers, but to be honest, I was not looking for the video function anyways. I would have gone with different equipment if video-making was my interest. I needed this for photography, and that is where it excels!
The image quality on this camera is absolutely brilliant! Sensor contributes little noise even in rough lightning moments. As far as performance, it has gone unmatched for years (now the Nikon D7500 is out and I have not tested it yet… hear great things though). If like me, your main interest lies on still photography, then this is a great, cheaper option!

One of my favorite features of the Nikon D7200 isn’t the camera itself at all. It is the grip Nikon made for it (MB-D15)! Connects in seconds, no added cables or connections, basically just plug in and it works brilliantly! It can hold a second battery, and it has a built-in trigger so when you flip the camera sideways, boom, ready to comfortably shoot! One of my least favorite features when talking about this camera is when taking videos in any sense, which as I mentioned before, better if you just look elsewhere in my opinion. The D7200 does not lend itself to be a great video-taking DSLR quite frankly.

So… which camera should anyone buy? Is this Nikon truly as much of a standout as some of its predecessors used to be? Well, not so simple to answer such questions. At the end of the day, it’s the photographer’s mind that makes a photo great and not his/her equipment necessarily. It is mostly a matter of preference, but, better equipment certainly makes it a bit easier to make quality prints. The competition is fierce now in the field of somewhat cheaper DSLRs with Canon, Samsung and others coming out with amazing cameras! If taking videos, etc is your priority then this Nikon won’t serve your needs as well as other cameras, but for still photography... man… this camera is sweet! (See some of my photos taken with it) I fully recommend it!

Have a great day everyone, and of course… See you, space cowboy!
