Have you ever thought about the word “nobility?”
The root word is the Latin gnobilis, which meant "high born." Either you were born a noble, or you were not. There was no in-between. Historically, nobility had nothing to do with your actual accomplishments...it was a matter of fate. You were born into a story that was already written.
Today, the term has evolved to mean anyone who displays moral courage.
In other words, nobility is now a choice rather than a circumstance.
Markets gave the common man something far more important than money....respect.
Today, most of us reject any philosophy that implies some people are inherently born superior to other people. It wasn't always this way.
We have capitalism to thank for this.
