For those who were hoping that the recent train wreck wouldn't come to an end just yet, today's drama-filled update will tickle you silly.
I sent an eTransfer to my new landlord yesterday for damage deposit and half a month's rent. It didn't immediately go through, but I didn't think anything of it. Transactions can take a while.
But I woke up this morning with a text saying the amount still hadn't gone through. I tried to log in to online banking, and I couldn't. Uh-oh.
I noticed there was a voicemail from my bank, so I listened to it. They indicated that I would need to visit a local branch to get the issue resolved. Naturally, I went to the bank as early as I could.
The teller didn't get into any detail as to why I needed a new card, but after confirming my identity, handed me a new card, at which point I set up a new PIN.
Through a series of phone calls, I figured out that the issue was with a possible fraudulent transaction. Apparently, there are many rental scams going around. People are getting swindled by potential landlords who are asking for money upfront without meeting the possible tenant, or signing a contract. Basically, the bank was trying to protect me.
They asked me whether I'd met the person and if I had signed a contract, and I indicated that I had. They told me they would have their fraud department look it over again and that I would get an email notification when the transaction was completed successfully.
Well, instead of an email notification, I got a call. The bank blocked my card for a second time.
At that point, I decided not to go through with the rental. The fact that the landlord had been identified as fraud (not once but twice), plus the fact that I had almost $1,500 missing somewhere in digital transit, left me quite uneasy.
Do I know for sure the landlords weren't legit? No. There were a few red flags. One was that there was a lot of pressure to get the rent money to them ("if the eTransfers don't work, why not come by with cash?"), as well as the fact that they didn't give me a receipt or the keys to the suite (they did give me a key code, just not the keys).
Again, they could be good people. I just don't know. I feel crappy about the whole situation. Even though I could have been swindled, I feel like I did something wrong. I've been feeling sensitive lately, and the only reason I can think of is because of the work I've been doing on myself.
Does this mean my spiritual experience from the other day was all bunk? No, I'm still in good spirits that this is all leading somewhere. But it does call big G into question, as well as how badly free will can mess up what might otherwise be a good outcome.
Fuck it. I don't know.
