North Korea's Foreign Ministry issued a rare strong statement on the 2nd warning that North Korea will resume its nuclear weapons development policy if the US does not lift economic sanctions. This is the first time Pyongyang has threatened to resume nuclear weapons development after North Korea's supreme leader Kim Jong Un announced a new national policy in April this year to fully develop its economy.
Associated Press reports that North Korea's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that if the United States does not want to change its position, North Korea may resume its policy of " advancing" with the national economy in developing nuclear weapons at the same time. The statement also accused Washington of undermining the promise made by Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Trump at the Singapore summit in June for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. However, North Korea did not say explicitly that it would abandon the ongoing nuclear talks with Washington.
In response, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo revealed during his news visit to Fox that he will meet with North Korea's " counterpart" next week. The official Pompeo refers to is apparently Kim Jong Un's right and left hand and Yeong-cheol Kim, vice chairman of the Central Committee of the North Korean Workers' Party. Pompeo did not specify the time and place of this meeting, but the US side may focus more on persuading North Korea to take more concrete steps to achieve denuclearization and discuss the second Sichuan Gold Council.
In addition, Kim Jong Un expressed dissatisfaction with the international sanctions against North Korea during his recent visit to the construction of tourist areas on gangwon's Yuanshan and Koma coasts. The Korean Central News Agency quoted Kim Jong Un as saying, " Hostile forces are ridiculously keen to impose vicious sanctions to prevent us from promoting the welfare of the people and the development of the country, with the intention of driving us to change and yield. " The report does not specify which countries" hostile forces " refer to.
However, Trump insisted on his good relationship with Kim Jong Un when hosting the election campaign party in Missouri on the 1st. Trump mentioned that Kim Jong Un's agreement to allow international inspectors to enter North Korea's nuclear test site in Fengxili represents an optimistic prospect for denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
