Why are so many NU kyai smokers? And why, the DKI Jakarta regulation on smoking bans in buildings and public places does not apply in NU building?
Kyai-kyai NU seemed not working with NO SMOKING warning! which is usually attached to various buildings. Although there are such restrictions in a room, they remain seduced without fear of disemprit apparatus, even if there is air conditioning inside.
For them, NO SMOKING is by no means forbidden them. NO SMOKING it Nahdlatoel Oelama (old spelling) Smoking: the area where people NO (NU) smoke.
That's an old anecdote about NU residents who are mostly experts of reckoning (cigarette suctionists). Who knows who originally created the anecdote, I do not know. What is clear, stories like this are usually discussed repeatedly among NU people and surrounding areas as jokes relieving tired after the Koran.
But I am not going to tell you about the asbabun nuzul of NU people smoking. I just wanted to share about the NU militancy against its visible NU-on Sunday (3/2) this afternoon at the summit of the 82nd NU held in mass in Gelora Bung Karno and in various other parts of Indonesia.
The NU's Fanatism is most evident in East Java, especially Madura and the Horseshoe. There, NU is not only understood simply as an organization of the mass of Islam-based Indonesian traditional, but (sometimes) lived as Religion.
Just try asking Madurese people. What is your religion? Maybe (if you are lucky) someone will reply: "My religion is NU, sir." Lha Islam? "Islam is a doctrine, a universal value system, beginning with the recognition that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is Allah's Apostle."
Too exaggerated? Maybe. But why is NU not pursued like Ahmadiyah or Mossadeq followers? The answer is simple: it's anecdote! Just a picture of how fanatical they are to NU. NU citizens still believe that there is no God besides Allah, Muhammad Allah's Apostle. Not ordaining NU Founder KH Hasyim Asy'ari as a new prophet. They pray as usual, fasting in the month of Ramadan, issuing zakat, and (if able) to pilgrimage. They are Ahlussunnah waljamaah Islam very Indonesia, very Java and Java corner (read: Madura)
Beyond that, you should not be surprised if many NU kyai act nyeleneh, ignorant, and apply strange. That is part of the way they live a religious teaching and maybe that's how they communicate with each other. The strange actually attracted many people to start studying Islam without having to be afraid of losing its original character as a Javanese, madura, sunda, batak, papua, menado, bugis, dayak, even Indonesia.
Islam can be accepted in Indonesia, one of them is because of the merits of Walisongo that nyeleneh it. Walisongo does not spread Islam in a naughty language and away from the impression of arabism. They spread and lived Islam as a taste. And that is what kyai-kyai NU founders are continuing.
