Suben a 172 los positivos detectados en Euskadi ligados al brote de Mallorca

The positives detected in the Basque Autonomous Community (BAC) linked to the outbreak in Mallorca have risen to 172 and there are another 306 people in quarantine, as reported Monday by the Minister of Health of the Basque Government, Gotzone Sagardui.

In an interview to Bizkaia Irratia, Sagardui has updated the data on the outbreak that has occurred as a result of the end-of-year trips to the Balearic island and has affected young people from several autonomous communities, including Euskadi. The counselor has pointed out that thanks to the screening and the work of the surveillance and traceability network, 46 positives have been detected in the last hours.

According to the Minister, in addition to the data provided, 500 more people have undergone diagnostic tests during this weekend. "The response (to the mass screening) has been good. The data may still vary, because we are keeping open the possibility of having the test for whoever wants it. In addition, we must wait for the sequencing, to know what variants are in these positives. For the moment, the British and some Indian (known as the delta variant, twice as contagious) have appeared," he explained.

Last Friday, when it was announced that there were 126 positive cases, the Department of Health requested testing of young people between 16 and 19 years old who had traveled to the island since June 12. Those people arriving these days from Mallorca could also be tested. The screening has been developed in all Osakidetza health organizations this Saturday and Sunday.

Regarding the inoculation campaign, the head of Health informed that people under 39 years of age are currently being vaccinated. "With the vaccinations we expect this week, we hope to finish in a couple of weeks with that decade and start with the next one. Moving forward by decades, immunization will be faster for everyone, and our intention is to do it as quickly as possible, for everyone," she concluded.
