In the early 2000's, I was a DJ for a small college radio station in Claremore, Oklahoma. KRSU was a group of volunteer musico's that were rabid about the college radio format (CMJ) and exposing people to new music. I had a weekly show, called The Joe Show and was an Executive Producer for Omnizine Radio, which highlighted music from artists that lived in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Texas and Missouri.
In an attempt to keep my creative juices flowing, I'm resurrecting The Joe Show here on #steemit and will feature 5 tracks that I'm currently listening to. I tend to sift through lots of music, so the genres will overlap and be wide-ranging. If anyone bothers to check out this music and actually likes what I'm doing, I may expand this to 10 tracks. Be sure to follow me, if you're looking to explore music. Leave a comment, if you want more information or just to chat about the songs. Resteem if you're feeling froggy.
YAEJI / RAINGURL
This song is a Chill track that just mesmerizes me. A nerdy brainiac Asian woman manages to shatter all of the stereotypes because she created all of her own beats, sang the lyrics herself, created the concept for the video, produced the video and is just an all-around bad ass. The lyrics are a bit repetitive, but it's perfect for dancefloor zombiness and the beat is really infectious around the chorus. Super popular in Los Angeles, at the moment.
WATCH THE DUCK / THERE YOU ARE
I'm really liking this track because it gives me a 1980s-Billy-Ocean vibe. The singer caroons like a Luther Vandross / Peabo Bryson hybrid. The beat is now, but the lyrical style is retro and tasty, if you're into that genre. I quite enjoy this song and wanted to share it with you.
SOL / IF YOU DON'T CALL
This song brings me back to my high school days and infuses the sounds of the boy band era in a modern way. Recreating the New Edition / NKOTB craze, the video is a great spoof between infomercial, the old MTV style videos and the cheesy boy band dance moves from back in the day. Seattle's version of Fresh Prince really hit a homerun with this one. Solid.
ZEDD + MAREN MORRIS + GREY / THE MIDDLE
Having Maren Morris sing this lead was a brilliant move. I've been a fan of hers on the country side of the fence and seeing her crossover to Top 40 is refreshing and logical. Zedd and Grey go bonkers with the synth, beat, hook goodness and what I like the most about this track (besides her wicked vocals) are the tick-tock clock and gratuitous use of snare shots. The production values are stronger on this track than several other songs currently gracing Top 40 and I wanted to add this to this episode.
TAUREN WELLS / HILLS AND VALLEYS
I don't pretend to be an afficionado on the Christian music format, but this song really stood out to me. I've listened to K-LOVE off and on for about a month now and there's only a few songs that catch my attention. I like the message in this track and the instrumentation is really good too.
