A Wasp Eating Wassabi

in ntopaz •  5 years ago

ntopaz-image-0Hey Steemians! You following yet?

So Ntopaz had a Macrophotography contest that I totally missed entering... but I don't need a contest to share great content with you!

I highly doubt that wassabi is what ithat wasp is eating (if it's even eating)... But that's what it looks like, so that's the title.

This one doesn't have a big back story of why I shot it.... but it is a very memorable photo for me because of HOW I got it.

If you read my photography backstory (check my feed for the photo of the little girl sharing an ice cream cone with a cute doggie), then you'll rememberer that all the money I was earning was going right back into lenses. I bought a Macro lens... My first one was 100mm F2.8. For those who don't know, a Macro lens lets you photograph things that are REALLY close.... And I was on a mission to get close to things.... But what?

Oh look! There's a Wasp nest under the ledge of the warehouse... let's climb 30 feet up a ladder, and hope they don't mind a big lens getting right up close. What could possibly go wrong? :)

I was scared of them... especially while I"m on a ladder... that would not be a good time to get attacked by wasps.

At first, nothing happened, I got close, got a couple of shots, then a couple of them noticed me, and they started flying off (probably to call for backup) - and then some started flying at my lens..... and that's when I decided that I've shot enough, and I should get down before they decide to fully attack.

The result is what you see above.

I didn't fall, I didn't get stung. I did feel a massive surge of adrenaline and victory.

I now also have a 180mm Macro lens.... but I don't have a ladder, and while I still do dumb shit, I haven't tried getting so close to a wasp nest again.

This is such a nice capture. Yeah, I can understand how those tiny creatures may feel by seeing a giant holding some wired camera stuff. ha ha ha...
I would love to see this photo in the macro photo contest. Never mind, maybe they will arrange another contest in recent time. Thanks for sharing. :)

I know, right? Can you picture if a giant who's head is bigger than your house poked his head up to your window and started watching you eat your meal? Craziness.
Yeah-- bummer that I missed the contest... but... whatever... my motivation is to share cool stuff with people, contests are fun to enter and win... but that's not why I'm here (but I am fiercely competitive, so... bring on the contests!)

I totally understand!

Wow! What an amazing shot! It looks like MIB in real life. Hahaha!

Thanks for the kind words! I really need to dust off my old photography- got a ton of fascinating shots around.... That nobody's seen.

Yeah- Wasps, and many other creatures look ridiculously alien! Watched some of those Planet Earth / Our Planet / One Strange Rock shows on Netflix, etc... and they all got some weird critters on there.... There's some legit alien looking/acting things...

So we will see more photos from you, right? That's great!

Yeah-- I've got a bunch currently with me... though, the "entire collection" (minus ones that were lost to harddrive crashes, etc) is in storage 30 hours drive from here.

Oh man, i can see its eyes, lol. Great shot:)

Yeah... I usually don't get that close to them :) I too look at the eyes now, that it's just a photo and I won't get stung by looking.

Wooow, macro photo always stunning. Great capture!

And those two just love to watch Giligan's Island, because they really love Ginger.

i love ginger too. its yummy ;)

If my mother sees this picture, she'll scream with fright, I don't like this insect, but it really is a fascinating photograph, very sharp.

Then make sure to put it as her phone's wallpaper without telling her :D

I too hate Wasps... but they are cool to photograph, and are fascinating creatures.

And they are very important insects in the biological ecosystem because of the pollen issue.

Seen Black Mirror Season 3? We're probably going to have to go with that kind of solution- Robotic bees.... to pollenate flowers, and of course, spy on the population.

Wow! This is absolutely fantastic. It was worth all your money, effort and facing your fears. The eyes and expression on the face are amazing, and the "wasabi" really sets off your shot. Great job :)

Thanks so much! I appreciate that.
I like my life now... but when I was doing photography only, it certainly opened up many new doors that I wouldn't otherwise have gone through (such as sticking my face up to a wasp's nest).

That's pretty freaky!

On an unrelated note. How are you at logos?

I'm ok.... I can make them. Most peoples' logos are pretty generic, and kind of suck. Then there are those that are truly masterful at symbolism and minilaist design, and they make a logo that's truly worthy. I'd say since the bar is so low, I can create something better than many... but is probably not going to win any trophies.
