In today’s NYT opinion piece, Mrs. Collins (the wife of Dan Collins, a senior producer for CBS News), writes about the Catholic Church’s opposition to all abortions, Republican opposition to late-term abortions, and some lawmakers’ possible opposition to contraception. She then concludes that “All this is basically about punishing women who want to have sex for pleasure.”

What an incredibly ignorant statement to make! A demonstrably false statement. I’m sure there are many Republicans, as well as Democrats, who enjoy sex, even when it doesn’t lead to procreation! The real issue, from an anti-abortion perspective, is that abortion constitutes the termination of the life of a human fetus. The anti-abortion position – as I understand it, though personally I am not opposed to most abortions – focuses on promoting the possibility of human life, not on “punishing women who want to have sex for pleasure.”

Whether the members of the Supreme Court, rather than state and federal legislators, ought to decide on the legality of abortion, is an ongoing debate which pits legal, ethical, and ideological reasoning for abortion against reasoning in opposition to it. People of intellectual honesty and integrity can readily be found on both sides of the debate. Gail Collins, unfortunately, does not appear to be among their number.
