Occupy Wall Street was a movement founded in 2011 in New York City. It was majorly due to the result of the financial crash of 2008. Lack of accountability of how the situation was handled with bailing out many American banks with taxpayer dollars infuriating a majority of the population of the United States. It infuriated them so much that they decided to not just take to the streets but set up a permanent occupation starting in the financial district of New York City.
From there it branched out into many cities around the country and around the world. The movement was largely about challenging the rules of the capitalist system but largely opposed many facets of the corporate state. One of its core principles was to use direct democracy for the movements decision-making process.
There was large interest and participation throughout the country over the many months Occupy Wall Street occurred, springing up Occupations in cities all over America and the Western World. With Occupy's facilitation methods, direct democracy was brought in the minds of many
Years after Occupy Wall Street subsided talks of direct democracy have hung fresh in the hearts of many who participated and inspired many through the movement.
R.I.P.A.C. is inspired by this push for direct democracy brought up by Occupy Wall Street. We would like to lend a hand to enable thorough direct democracy processes much further into the workings of our national government.
