Can't you just feel the pressure seeing a lot of art contests on the feed? What should you join first? How would you portray their theme with your art? Would you meet their deadlines? Feels a little bit stressing right? Well, it did kinda pinched my beloved brain cells. But, what's important is that I still tossed a little effort and gambled joining these contests.
I know it was kinda stressful but everytime I finish something, I still feel that certain fulfillment everytime I post my artwork entries along with it's content. And, I got another one for you guys, hope you'd like it. I'll be showing you the piece, my artwork entry for a certain contest here on Steem it.
Good day people of Steem it! Another contest got my attention, it was kinda challenging tho. They have this theme that seemed to squeeze that inner nerd out of us. The contest was entitled:
ART EXPLOSION WEEK 39: Theme WHIMSICAL/ now 25 SBD in prizes!
Contest master: @juliakponsford
Special Sponsor and Guest judge: @vachemorte
Here is my entry:
I'll be showing you the process of this piece and the medium I used on finishing this artwork in a bit.
On @juliakponsford 's post which you can see here:

Stated that artists should portray the word WHIMSICAL.
Sure, I could understand english but I haven't encountered such term. I actually shrinked, thinking that I was too dumb not knowing this "so academic" term or word. Lucky for me, I got Google by my side and helped me out.
So, I bumped into Merriam Webster's definitions and there they stated that Whimsical is:
A. resulting from or characterized by whim or caprice; especially : lightly fanciful whimsical decorations
B. subject to erratic behavior or unpredictable change
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/whimsical
So, I kinda saw this unfamiliar words along with the definition of Whimsical; Caprice and Erratic. And, I dugged in little deeper to understand the word better.
The word Caprice is defined as:
a : a sudden, impulsive, and seemingly unmotivated notion or action policy changes that seem to be motivated by nothing more than caprice
b : a sudden usually unpredictable condition, change, or series of changes the caprices of the weather
a disposition to do things impulsively a preference for democratic endeavor over authoritarian caprice
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/caprice
Erratic is defined as:
1 : having no fixed course : wandering an erratic comet
2 a : characterized by lack of consistency, regularity, or uniformity erratic dieting keeps erratic hours
b : deviating from what is ordinary or standard : eccentric an erratic genius
3 : transported from an original resting place especially by a glacier an erratic boulder
4 archaic : nomadic
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/erratic#h1
So, with all that nerd food that was ingested by my dumb brain, I kinda thought; how would I put it into art? What bests describe the word Whimsical? What the hell?!
Well, I thought it through and kinda stalked on the comment section to checkout some of the entries. They were amazing, colorful, cute and deliciously portrayed as if they were candies the I was about to eat. But, I was still stressful and thinking what was I going to draw?!
After I upvoted and reblogged the post, it took me 3 days to think it more over. Fairies are playful, dogs are too. Candies and colorful things are fancy, sure. But, what figure would also best describe an impulsive and unpredictable behavior? Something that is capricious and erratic.
Hmmm. . .
. . .
Then suddenly, there was this image that was kinda popping out at the back of my mind.
A monkey
And I finally realised that, that was it! A monkey! A capricious and erratic monkey! The best figure that I would come up with, that is also best describe the word WHIMSICAL!
Monkeys are very playful indeed, but they are also known to have this unpredictable behavior, they can be sometimes entertaining and sometimes aggressive.
So, I already have it figured that I would draw monkey. But how would I portray it as a reflection of my style and something that is competetively badass?
And so I thought of something that is quite famous from chinese mythologies and movies. So, if I would mix a monkey and badass. . . I could use the MONKEY KING of the chinese mythology as a reference for this contest!

Without any further do, let us proceed with the process of the piece.
In this piece, I used universal gel pens, black and red for the outlining, a common pencil for the shadings and Maped color pencils for the coloring.
I will be showing you series of photos portraying the process from the sketch, outline, shading and coloring of the piece. I might assume that these photos are self explanatory and were not that young to describe too much on the process. I hope. 😂
Let's cut out the chase and go with the process already!
