Lyrics and YouTube description below.
I wrote this song around 2013 or so (I've got a massive backlog of material), along with some other apocalyptic-sounding sort of songs. I knew I would share them one day, but couldn't really figure out when they would be fitting. Now seems a good time as we all struggle with the challenges of COVID things, but maybe even more so the secondary effects on our lives that are truly brutal for some people. As with the other songs on this theme, they are meant to bring courage. What I've been saying recently is that it's really important to stop expecting life to be fair, and just resolve to have courage and strength for whatever comes, and to find the soldier in you to fight against the challenges you face.
A lot of people don't like that kind of language, but anyone I know who is a survivor of serious adversity will use words like "fighter" & "soldier" because their experience felt/feels like true battle. It's been the same for me. As long as I couldn't find my fight, I was losing. It never helped to continue a personal narrative of weakness and passivity. Sometimes you really do just have to choose courage and fight for your life and the things that matter.
You're much stronger than you think, but you'll only see what you're capable of if you choose to fight.
Here are the rest of the songs and commentaries so far for this theme (#SongsofCourage):
This is part of an ongoing "song theme" series I'll be doing throughout 2020 with regular commentary. I'll be sharing the gamut from politics, culture, and art, to love, injustice, and true humanity, all from the perspective of a Catholic, conservative, female millennial.

"Carry On (We Are Soldiers)"
The sun was looking like fire today
Ash and smoke in my lungs today
Burning up all that we had to say
Muted before the night breaks the day
Apocalypse of the heart, it seems
And now we're looking like casualties
We're sipping coffee and living lean
Fixing the world in our restless sleep
We are tired now
But the weather won't stop us
We are soldiers & we carry on, carry on
We cry out
'Cause together we're stronger
We are soldiers & we carry on, carry on
Love is a battlefield, so they say
This is the stuff of life, so they say
But hope is coming in spades today
No buckled knees in the face of grace
We are tired now
But the weather won't stop us
We are soldiers & we carry on, carry on
We cry out
'Cause together we're stronger
We are soldiers & we carry on, carry on
We are tired now
But the weather won't stop us
We are soldiers & we carry on, carry on
We cry out
'Cause together we're stronger
We are soldiers & we carry on, carry on
