Hey guys - if you have a minute to spare, it would mean a lot to me if you'd consider subscribing, commenting, and liking over on YouTube. It helps the algorithm, and helps me get these songs and commentaries out to more people who need to hear it (you know many do--we need a lot more free thinkers).
Hope you enjoy this one. Lyrics in the YouTube description included below.
This is the second song about socialism in my #SocialismSongs series, with many more themes coming, all with commentary from a conservative, Catholic, millennial perspective, but open to everyone of good will (probably you!).
You can listen to the first song of the series, "Venezuela," here:
To be clear, I didn't set out to write a bunch of songs about socialism. I'm not agenda-driven and I loathe propaganda; I'm an honest artist with set of philosophical presuppositions like every artist you have ever listened to. Mine are come by through experience and reason and a lot of reading and thinking. These songs were all written over the course of the last ten years due to a growing awareness of the dangerous cultural shift toward socialism/communism and government control accompanied by the many personal stories I heard by friends and acquaintances while I was studying in Europe. So many Eastern European, Russian, and Chinese people have suffered more than you can possibly imagine. I know a lot of people have questions about socialist and communist governments, particularly in America and Canada these days.
This song focuses on the disproportionate influence of celebrities in our times, as well as our relationship with technology, and the implicit, constant message, often via propaganda, that we need to get in line with the du jour ideology or find ourselves pariahs in our own countries and cultures. We must, must, must learn how to think for ourselves - how to ask questions, and take up questions with much more thoughtfulness than an Instagram post can offer, regardless of where on the political spectrum we sit. It's really sad that we are increasingly controlled by celebrities, technology, and propaganda and simply bow to it without a fight for our hearts and mind really at all. I really believe we can be much better than this. We are capable of nobility, greatness, magnanimity, courage, and love--not a shallow existence marked by ennui.
More coming in the commentary soon. I recently also commented on why many were resistant to coronavirus measures due to concerns about government control precipitated by a crisis. You can see that commentary here:

This is part of an ongoing "song theme" series I'll be doing throughout 2020 with regular commentary. I'll be sharing the gamut from politics, culture, and art, to love, injustice, and true humanity.
Subscribe to follow along on my hike through these chaotic times. Civilization is still worth fighting for.

Is This What We Want?
Pop stars tell you what to think
And you willingly agree
They don't care about anything
But that you follow blindly
Be a puppet; sell your soul
And you'll fit right in
Be a coward, controlled
Have a heart of tin
And you'll be just fine
Give up your mind
To their whims and desires for your life
Is this what we want?
Is this what we want?
Is this what we want?
'Cause it's what we're getting
See no sunshine, keep your dark
Let screens become your guiding light
Memorize their slogans
And don't put up a single fight
Be a puppet; sell your soul
And you'll fit right in
Be a coward, controlled
Have a heart of tin
This isn't a joke
A word for the "woke":
They will cut you off at the throat
Is this what we want?
Is this what we want?
Is this what we want?
'Cause it's what we're getting
If you can't see it you're already dead
Open your eyes, and get out of bed
Go take a walk and clear out your head
Forget the poison that you've been fed
If you can't see it you're already dead
Open your eyes, and get out of bed
Go take a walk and clear out your head
Forget the poison that you've been fed
'Cause it's not what you want
It's not what you want
It's not what you want
It's not what you want
It's not what you want
It's not what you want
It's not what you want
But it's what we're getting
If you don't say "stop"
Say "stop"
