The images depict a tropical paradise where the jungle vegetation is dim, the sea is gray and local residents are seen black and white. But the Belgian photographer has not captured the world as she sees, but as the islanders see it. Named "The Colorblind Island," Pingelap is home to a large number of people who can not differentiate colors. This phenomenon also known as achromatopsia ("full coloring") occurs in about 1 to 3,000 people in the world. The island's rare condition has an explanation. There is believed to have survived a king in the 18th century who suffered from such a symptom and he is believed to have repopulated the island after the tsunami, having many children. Hence, many of his descendants inherited a rare gene that causes achromatopsia. The hereditary state continues to go through generations.
