Oculus won as a gift.
The reason the spike happened was Oculus became a pretty heavy Christmas gift.
This makes a case people are seeing Oculus as a gaming console, similar to Nintendo, PlayStation & Xbox.
Also, TikTok, YouTube & Instagram were all still in the top 5. Meaning of all the gifts with some app attached to it, Oculus was the only one in the top 5 and won.
Estimated sales
Oculus sales aren’t official yet, but we can use downloads as a metric to predict sales.
Some apps have reported making it to number one in the App Store with 150-200,000 downloads in a single day.
TikTok has held number one the majority of this year and has 62 million downloads in January of 2021, averaging over 2 million a day.
Likely not as high now, but this is a good indicator that Oculus had over 1 million units sold this Christmas.
It was reported in early November that the Oculus Quest has since launch in 2020 sold 10 million units.
Very likely they broke over 1 million sold just this Christmas.
Competition
It was estimated that Sony sold about 17 million PSVR sets since their launch in 2017.
Facebook is now outselling Sony in this area and yesterday was a huge indicator of that.
A lot of good news, so is there any bad news?
Nintendo Switch has sold 93 million units.
PS4 sold 116 million units.
Xbox One sold 50 million units.
Facebook will likely break 20 million total Oculus units sold by 2023, but it still has a long way to do until considered on par with conventional gaming.
Also, Sony, Microsoft & Nintendo rarely have a huge profit on the consoles, with third party games being the majority of the market.
Facebook is on path to be number one in VR, but it’s a growing market and likely will get more competitive with everyone eventually joining in.
